Whole Body Vibration Monitoring Device

Driver’s seat with active vibration measurement Vibindicator™ device

vibindicatorThe EU Directives 2002/44EG concerning vibrations in the workplace can be a minefield for employers who must exercise a duty of care that their employees are not exposed to vibrations during their normal course of work, which could expose employees  to ill-health or accidents.

What are whole body vibrations?

Whole-body vibration (WBV) is transmitted through the seat or feet of employees who drive mobile machines, or other work vehicles, over rough and uneven surfaces as a main part of their job. Large shocks and jolts may cause health risks including back-pain. The vibrations are measured in m/s² and in the directions longitude (X), lateral (Y) and vertical (Z).

What are the allowed vibration limits?

The directives allow a daily whole body exposure of maximum 1.15 m/s². The daily vibration exposure is based on an average of the total exposure during an 8 hours working day and is based on frequency weighed vibration level for the dominated vibration direction and is given as m/s².

Action must be taken in the work place if the daily vibration exposure exceeds the action value of  0.5 m/s². Also the limit value must not exceed the daily vibration exposure value of 1.15 m/s².

How can we help ?

Our HealthVib®inSeat  is built into the seat and interfaces with our Vibindicator™ together they provide a warning system for measuring and indicating body vibration exposure in accordance with the current directives. The results are transferred wirelessly to the Vibindicator™, to inform the driver of their vibration dose he/she is exposed to at that point in time and the data is also accumulated to give a result from a whole working day. Our system is calibrated for each seat model to give accurate measurement values.

Gary Shaw from Be-Ge explains "Vehicle manufacturers invest millions to ensure they meet the Whole Body Vibration legislation, but they can only meet a "generic" standard as they cannot adapt the vehicle to each specific user. For example a bus running on a smooth road surface would have one result, the same bus on a rural route with plenty of potholes, would give a very different reading. Our device enables the fleet manager to get an accurate reading for the drivers actual route, the data can then be downloaded and a drivers shift patterns & breaks can be worked out to ensure they are complying with the legislation"

Jany Motorhome Type Approved M1 Folding Seat

Jany develop a clever M1 seating system for Westfalia Motorhomes

westfalia

When Westfalia were looking to develop a compact Motorhome based on the popular Fiat Scudo, space was a premium and turning a medium sized vehicle into a fully functional motorhome was quite a design challenge.

Westfalia turned to Be-Ge Jany to come up with a solution with a very tight design brief, they wanted 4 M1 approved seats in the passenger area and the seats to fold forwards flat to enable fold-away boards to be placed on top of the seats strong enough for the unit to become a bed.

michelangelo_seats_foldedAs if the mechanism to enable a seat to fold flat and support the weight of a bed & two occupants was not difficult enough. They wanted the seats to recline, have integral seat belts, the seats had to be removable out of  the vehicle and be M1 compliant.

Jany came up with a solution with the development of their M1 825 seat which not only matched their requirements exactly, but is fully certified to meet Type approval and is tested to meet 76/115/EEC as amended by 2005/41/EC, ECE-R17/07, 74/408/EEC annex IV (as amended by 2006/96/EC) 77/541/EEC  (as amended by 96/36/EC)

Traditionally motorhomes and campers did not require “Type Approval” however as of April 2012 all brand new motorhomes/campers will require Type Approval. It is the responsibility of the motorhome manufacturer to have the new motorhome tested and certified safe for UK and European roads.

Our new M1 825 seat represents a massive step forward especially with the fact that Motorhomes come into the M1 category April 2012 and Motorhome flexible seating will be one key obstacle that is a demand from  the end user, but must meet the new Type Approvals

Be-Ge New 31 Stone Drivers Seat

Be-Ge introduce their new 31 Stone Drivers Seat 98_rotolift_mini

As a Nation we are getting larger and If trends continue, 60 per cent of men and 50 per cent of women will be obese by 2050. Whilst the government are ploughing millions on their healthy eating campaigns, it is still a “lifestyle choice” and it’s a problem that will not simply go away.

Be-Ge Seating is pleased to announce the launch of their 31 Stone driver’s seat aimed at tackling this global problem.

Gary Shaw from Be-Ge explains “The key is not to simply add more steel and reinforcing to reach your target safe working load, its to produce a seat which is in line with the gross weight limit of the vehicle and more importantly not to lose its vital functions and levels of comfort for the driver"

"Also you must look beyond the seats static safe working load. The engineering challenge is we are dealing with a moving vehicle so it’s safe working load fluctuates depending on factors such as the weight of the driver, speed & road conditions so Kinetic energy also has to be accounted for as heavy breaking could add up to 1.4 times the drivers weight to the seat at certain speeds. Something as simple as a pothole can give enough “jolt” to cause a standard seat failure, this could be disastrous for a bus driver carrying passengers”

Based on our well known 9000-series which is tried and tested in arduous forestry and heavy duty applications, the seat has added features such as reinforced backrest and seat cushion, up rated slider mechanism and armrests. The “heart” is its heavy duty Rotolift base with up rated shock and damping, height adjustment and rotation.

Jany M1 Prison Seat for Handcuffed Detainees

Jany Launch an M1 Tested Seat for Handcuffed DetaineesPrison_seat

When dealing with a detainee in handcuffs it creates an enormous problem for the Police or Prison officers, how do you get the three point belt on the detainee, without risking safety or security?

Traditionally two officers would sit handcuffed either side of the detainee and the detainee would not have a seat belt on or use a lap belt, this created a massive problem in the event of an accident as the inertia from the detainee would be enough to take the officers arms with them.

Safety aside, the other problem to get a three point belt on a prisoner would mean temporarily undoing their handcuffs, taking them from a secure restraint to unsecured back to secure, this is not only a massive security risk, but also adds extra “stress” not only on the detainee, but also the police officer or prison guard.

prison_seat_1

Jany came up with a clever solution, a twin buckle seat that allows you to “feed” the belt through the detainee’s arms and then fasten it up like a normal three point belt using the twin belts.

We feel this simple solution is a massive step forward in the working life of both the Police and Prison service and its patented design is not only useful, but fully tested and compliant with the stringent European M1 approvals.
