vibindicatorThe EU Directives 2002/44EG concerning vibrations in the workplace can be a minefield for employers who must exercise a duty of care that their employees are not exposed to vibrations during their normal course of work, which could expose employees  to ill-health or accidents.

 

What are whole body vibrations?

 

Whole-body vibration (WBV) is transmitted through the seat or feet of employees who drive mobile machines, or other work vehicles, over rough and uneven surfaces as a main part of their job. Large shocks and jolts may cause health risks including back-pain. The vibrations are measured in m/s² and in the directions longitude (X), lateral (Y) and vertical (Z).

 

What are the allowed vibration limits?

 

The directives allow a daily whole body exposure of maximum 1.15 m/s². The daily vibration exposure is based on an average of the total exposure during an 8 hours working day and is based on frequency weighed vibration level for the dominated vibration direction and is given as m/s².  

Action must be taken in the work place if the daily vibration exposure exceeds the action value of  0.5 m/s². Also the limit value must not exceed the daily vibration exposure value of 1.15 m/s².

 

How can we help ?

 

Our HealthVib®inSeat  is built into the seat and interfaces with our Vibindicator™ together they provide a warning system for measuring and indicating body vibration exposure in accordance with the current directives. The results are transferred wirelessly to the Vibindicator™, to inform the driver of their vibration dose he/she is exposed to at that point in time and the data is also accumulated to give a result from a whole working day. Our system is calibrated for each seat model to give accurate measurement values.

 

Gary Shaw from Be-Ge explains "Vehicle manufacturers invest millions to ensure they meet the Whole Body Vibration legislation, but they can only meet a "generic" standard as they cannot adapt the vehicle to each specific user. For example a bus running on a smooth road surface would have one result, the same bus on a rural route with plenty of potholes, would give a very different reading. Our device enables the fleet manager to get an accurate reading for the drivers actual route, the data can then be downloaded and a drivers shift patterns & breaks can be worked out to ensure they are complying with the legislation"
